Purnima is the full moon day in the Hindu lunar calendar, representing the maximum brilliance of the moon as it reaches exactly 180 degrees opposite the sun. Occurring at the zenith of the waxing fortnight (Shukla Paksha), it marks the end of the month in the Purnimanta calendar and the midpoint in the Amanta calendar.

In Hindu tradition, the full moon symbolizes completeness, clarity, and abundant vitality. The day is universally regarded as auspicious for sacred dips (snana) in holy rivers, observing devotional fasts, offering charitable donations, and conducting the congregational Satyanarayan Puja in homes and community halls.

Major national festivals coincide with prominent Purnimas throughout the year, including Guru Purnima in Ashadha, Raksha Bandhan in Shravana, Sharad Purnima in Ashwina, Kartik Purnima, and Buddha Purnima in Vaishakha.
