Buddha Purnima, also known as Vesak or Buddha Jayanti, is the most sacred day in Buddhist and broader dharmic traditions. It honors the thrice-blessed day marking the birth, supreme enlightenment (Bodhi), and final passing (Mahaparinirvana) of Gautama Buddha.

The day coincides with the full moon (Purnima) of the Hindu lunar month of Vaishakha. In traditional Vedic and Puranic astronomy, Lord Buddha is recognized and venerated as the ninth avatar of Lord Vishnu, emphasizing non-violence, compassion, and inner realization.

Pilgrims gather at historic pilgrimage sites including Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, Lumbini, and Kushinagar. Devotees participate in meditation, offer light and flowers at temples, listen to Dhamma teachings, and engage in acts of selfless service (dana) and charity.
